Week 3 Lab Assignment

Week 3 Lab Assignment

Q Week 3 Lab Report You are expected to do the labs assigned this week and to post your observations using this Word document in Blackboard. • Indicate what you did to achieve the desired goal, problems encountered, problem resolution, and lessons learned. • Include references that facilitated your understanding and problem solving. This Week’s Assignment has two parts (at least 750 words for the whole report – that includes Part One and Two) Part One: Use the attached the Week 3 Lab Projects document to guide you with this week’s lab. Submit this document in Blackboard showing the work you did to complete the assignment. As you conduct the lab exercises, provide clear screenshots with comments describing what each screenshot displays. After completing the labs, please describe any problems that you encountered, how you resolved these problems, and what you learned from the labs. Be sure to include references that facilitated your understanding and problem solving. Part Two: Research the following bulleted items below, using the relevant reading resources for this week and supplementary ones you may come up with: • How are the security vulnerabilities found on Microsoft Windows systems different or similar with those found on Linux systems? Which operating environment is more vulnerable and what is the basis of your assertion? How would these differences or similarities impact the work of a security administrator? • Are virtual private networks (VPNs) always secure? What could make a VPN environment vulnerable to attacks? And how would defense-in-depth and creating a layered-technology approach enhance VPN networks?

All screen shots are on the lab exercise. I found this lab difficult to follow and even more difficult to explain the “why”. Partly because the VM’s are difficult to navigate and after a while I found the frustration getting in the way of learning. For example, the VM displays do not match the same resolution of the monitors on my personal computer making me to constantly scroll up or down to see what I’m doing. This also makes the multiple displays on my computer useless. All these things and more combine to increase the time needed to complete the labs. Everything being taught in this class should be something that I am excited to learn but the way the VM’s labs are setup make it feel more like a grind rather than a learning experience. There must be a more exciting and hands on way to learn this stuff.
